Madrid is my Type: Plaza Mayor

Aplicando el mismo método de tres pasos que proponemos para Written World, (Explora/Disfruta/Crea), hemos trabajado en la plaza Mayor y su entorno por encargo del Ayuntamiento de Madrid, coincidiendo con la celebración del 400 aniversario de la plaza.

En la Escuela Superior de Diseño de Madrid consideramos que el conocimiento del pasado y de nuestro patrimonio cultural es una base muy importante desde la que imaginar el futuro.

Las diferentes especialidades de la escuela han llevado a cabo proyectos relacionados con esta idea y han colaborado con diferentes instituciones de la memoria, como el Museo de Artes Decorativas, la Biblioteca Nacional, el Museo del Traje, el Museo de América o el Rijksmuseum, a través de la Embajada de los Países Bajos en Madrid.

Sobre rótulos y tipografía, varios profesores trabajado junto con nuestros estudiantes en diferentes proyectos a lo largo de los últimos años, desde el primer proyecto iniciado en 2003, Written Europe.

Applying the same three-step method that we propose for Written World, Explore / Enjoy / Create, we have explored the Plaza Mayor and its surroundings on behalf of Madrid City Council, coinciding with the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the square.

At the School of Design of Madrid we believe that knowledge of the past and of our cultural heritage is a very important basis from which to imagine the future.

The different specialties of the school have carried out projects related to this idea and have collaborated with different memory institutions, such as the Museum of Decorative Arts, the National Library, the Costume Museum, the Museum of America or the Rijksmuseum, through the Embassy of the Netherlands in Madrid.

On urban signs and typography, too, several of us have carried out different projects together with our students over the last years, since Written Europe, the first one, started in 2003.

Hemos considerado distintas formas en que los signos tradicionales pueden ser punto de partida de nuevos signos, desde el diseño de fuentes basadas en antiguos rótulos al diseño de identidad y envases o intervenciones de carácter más experimental.

We have considered different ways in which traditional signs can be the starting point of new signs, from the design of new fonts based on old street signs to identity and packaging design or experimental typography.
